Global Greater Boston: Immigrants in a Changing Region
February 14, 2024In 2024, Greater Boston is home to immigrants from all over the world who came here to work, study, find safety, and build economic prosperity for their families. Most immigrants to our region are now from Latin America and Asia rather than from Europe, as was the case for most of our history. Then and now, immigrants contribute a great deal to our region's innovation and diversity of perspective. In recent years, immigration has become the target of heated rhetoric and intense debate. At the same time, political, economic, and climate instability around the globe has led to increased migration to our region. For these reasons, immigration is front of mind for many Bostonians. In this report, Boston Indicators partnered with the Immigration Research Initiative to analyze who makes up immigrant communities in Greater Boston, quantify what they contribute to our regional economy, and detail the immigration pathways they take to get here. To do this, we organized the report into three sections:PART 1: Demographic Profile, which analyzes the composition of immigrant populations in our region and looks at how this has changed over time.PART 2: Economic Contributions, which examines the socioeconomic contributions and well-being of immigrants in our region. This section looks both at current conditions and the economic trajectory of immigrants over their careers and across the generations.PART 3: Immigration Pathways, which details the complex system that immigrants contend with in order to settle in Greater Boston. We hope this analysis of Greater Boston's immigrant population will help policymakers and service providers better understand immigrant communities and effectively implement programs and policies that make our region an even more welcoming and thriving place.
The Heart Work of Hard Work: Black Teacher Pipeline Best Practices at HBCU Teacher Education Programs
February 8, 2024This report by the UNCF Frederick D. Patterson Research Institute examines the best practices implemented at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) teacher preparation programs, which result in these institutions being significant producers of Black teachers for America's public education system. This report builds on the HBCU teacher preparation program scholarship by providing a snapshot of the recruitment, curricular, and co-curricular practices implemented at these institutions to strengthen the Black teacher pipeline. Through the voices of faculty, staff, and students at four HBCU teacher preparation programs, this report will introduce practices that support their Black pre-service teachers.
Climate Change: A series of Case Studies on South African Funder's Climate Journeys (Volume 2)
February 5, 2024Climate change is an increasingly pressing global issue that requires an immediate and concerted response to limit its most catastrophic consequences. Funders can play a key role in responding to climate change, however, funder responses to climate change have historically been relatively limited. That said, more funders are beginning to acknowledge the urgency with which climate change needs to be addressed and are increasingly seeing the impacts that climate change has on the often vulnerable communities that they serve. These climate change impacts have further implications for funders' work on other socio-economic challenges, with the communities that they serve facing additional challenges relating to food security, water scarcity, environmental damage, and heat waves.

A "good life" for every student: High schools embrace many pathways to success
January 1, 2024The Covid-19 pandemic and recovery period is a unique opportunity to understand contemporary issues in high school reform. Evidence has clearly demonstrated lingering Covid impacts on adolescent students that have deepened pre-existing inequities and worsened teen mental health. There's a natural desire to regain normalcy after the pandemic. But it's essential, and urgent, that we examine why that "normalcy" failed in the past to support every student's needs. We must identify effective, even new, ways to level the playing field for today's students, and for future generations. Research has shown that many high school educators and administrators experimented with new approaches during the pandemic. Can the lessons learned in this period contribute to more lasting, transformative shifts? This report begins to answer that question. Beginning in 2022, Arizona State University's Center on Reinventing Public Education (CRPE) and Columbia University's Center for Public Research and Leadership (CPRL)—with support from the Barr Foundation—began studying innovations in six public high schools in New England. We chose schools in a range of contexts that all had some form of redesign underway. Over 20 months, we interviewed students who had begun high school around when the pandemic struck; most of them had graduated by the end of the study in December 2023. We also interviewed students' caregivers, teachers, and administrators. We wanted to know what success meant for students and the adults in their lives, and how schools were making changes—including before the pandemic—to ensure every student had the opportunity to learn and thrive. We listened for where schools were succeeding, and what challenges they faced in the new normal of a post-pandemic landscape.
Why We Rhize: Learnings from a Decade of Supporting Movements

When Communities Keep Flooding: A Rural Environmental Justice Case Study
December 7, 2023We all want to live in places that are safe and able to respond to disasters. But right now, many rural communities and Native nations — especially communities of color and low-wealth places — experience repeated devastating flooding.Repeated flooding is an environmental justice issue for both urban and rural communities, but rural communities need rural solutions when confronting natural disasters and associated recovery efforts, as detailed in our call to action, Through Natural Disaster to Prosperity. The drivers of repeated flooding in rural communities are complex, including climate, unsustainable approaches to development, and structural inequity. Still, rural people across the country are working diligently and creatively on home-grown solutions. The communities and organizations profiled in this case study are all working hard to address the causes and conditions contributing to flooding in their areas, as well as to envision and build thriving futures of equitable rural prosperity. They generously shared their thoughts, focusing on two key questions:What structural challenges keep rural communities from addressing repeated flooding? What will it take for rural communities to drive their own solutions to repeated flooding?
Beyond Compliance: Preliminary Findings from an Investigation of Climate and Flooding Data Systems in the United States
December 6, 2023Government agencies and researchers in the United States have collected and shared environmental and climate data for decades in an effort to understand how climate change is impacting our communities, infrastructures, industries, and ecosystems. Much of this data is open in theory; many datasets maintained by federal agencies such as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) are required to make their data publicly available and usable. But large gaps in available data and granularity issues prevent meaningful public use. Other sources—municipal governments, university researchers, and community data collection projects—can help fill data gaps. Still, these sources face their own challenges, such as unclear licensing agreements, limited resources or technical capacity, as well as equity concerns (including data collection procedures that result in poorer quality data regarding low income neighborhoods).Modernizing this data infrastructure, as well as channels for integrating information from different sources, can support actors both within and outside of government to use this wealth of data for a variety of purposes. As part of the larger Beyond Compliance initiative, which aims to make government-derived environmental data more accessible and usable to a diversity of users and for a range of purposes, we are investigating challenges and opportunities related to data in the context of climate change resilience and adaptation planning.
